Summary

This document is part of the declassified files from the UK Ministry of Defence related to UFO sightings. In 2002, the Ministry of Defence released information about the Rendlesham Forest incident, a UFO event that occurred in 1980 near a U.S. Air Force base in England. Known as the "Rendlesham File," it contains over 170 pages of reports and analysis. While it had already been shared with individual applicants, it was now included in the MOD's Publication Scheme, a step toward greater transparency. The goal was to highlight how publication schemes allow the proactive release of information of public interest without waiting for individual requests. The Ministry justified its interest in UFOs as part of its duty to assess any unauthorized air activity that could affect national security.

The release of this information was part of the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, which required public authorities to improve transparency. The Ministry of Defence emphasized that while not all areas are of public interest, including cases like Rendlesham Forest demonstrated the value of publication schemes. Additionally, official responses were prepared for potential media questions, especially regarding parallel investigations into the non-disclosure of sensitive information. Despite efforts to appear more open, the Ministry insisted that not all non-disclosure decisions are unjustified, and that independent review is part of the democratic process.
