Summary

On September 15, 1947, a Pan American Airlines pilot and another observer reported a mysterious object over the Pacific, near the route between Midway and Oahu. The object, described as a fireball, suddenly changed direction and maintained a constant altitude—an unusual behavior for a meteor. Witnesses stated the object was moving at an estimated speed of 1,000 miles per hour and showed no signs of falling or reflecting light like a normal object. Despite detailed questioning, both observers agreed the object did not behave like any known natural phenomenon, prompting concern among military authorities at the time.

Records indicate the report was transmitted to intelligence officers of the Fleet and the Air Force, who classified it as an unidentified case. Explanations such as balloons, aircraft, or meteors were dismissed, as the object did not exhibit characteristics of any of these. The incident, though brief, lasted about six seconds and left witnesses puzzled. This case adds to the list of unexplained aerial phenomena from the 1940s, a period when UFO reports became more frequent and began to attract institutional interest.
