Summary

In April 1948, an amateur astronomer in Springfield, Illinois, reported seeing a spherical object with a yellowish red color that crossed the sky at high speed. The object, described as twice the size of Mars, was observed from the ground but could not be photographed due to its rapid movement. Although the report did not clearly identify the object, researchers suggested it could be a bolide or fireball, a rare but known celestial phenomenon. However, the second sighting, which lasted between 5 and 10 minutes, did not fit this explanation.

The report was reviewed by the Air Force and sent to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which forwarded it to the Air Force Chief of Staff for analysis. Although the witness did not mention the word "UFO," the testimony was taken seriously, and the informant was thanked for the report. The case reflects the authorities' concern for any unidentified phenomenon that could have national security implications.
