Summary

In April 1948, a U.S. Air Force pilot reported an unidentified flying object (UFO) while flying over Montgomery, Alabama. The officer, Colonel Robert H. Hughes, described the object as a silver disc approximately 8 feet in diameter, suspended by a parachute with a dark cable about 5 feet long. Below this, a silver canister or ball hung, resembling an aerial photographic device. The UFO was moving at high speed, exceeding 310 mph, and maintained a northeast course before disappearing after about five seconds. Hughes stated the object made no noise and left no exhaust trail, making it even more unusual.

The Air Force investigated the case as part of Project Grudge, an effort to analyze UFO reports. Although conventional explanations, such as weather balloons or atmospheric reflections, were considered, no definitive conclusion was reached. The report included a sketch of the object, adding credibility to the testimony. This incident, cataloged as number 113, became one of the most intriguing cases of the period, standing out for the clarity of the testimony and the detailed description of the object.
