Summary

In July 1948, a housewife and her mother in Ohio witnessed an unusual aerial phenomenon. While driving near the Ohio University campus, they saw a group of bright points in the sky resembling stars arranged like the Big Dipper. A main object, described as a giant lantern, floated slowly and emitted black smoke. Other drivers also observed it, but could not identify it. Military authorities investigated the case, considering weather balloons or common objects, but found no clear explanation.

Later, a teletype operator reported a white paper balloon landing in a field. Although initially thought to be a common balloon, the details didn't fully match. Military reports from the time, including Project SIGN, analyzed hundreds of similar cases, trying to rule out conventional explanations. While some were attributed to balloons or reflections, others, like this one, remained unresolved. The official document, with OCR errors and confusing dates, reflects the confusion and urgency of authorities trying to understand these phenomena.
