Summary

In November 1948, two Mustang fighters were dispatched to investigate an unidentified object near Andrews Field. The pilots observed it at an altitude of 37,000 feet, describing it as an inflated structure resembling an intestine, five times taller than wide. The estimated speed was just 2 miles per hour, and its heading was around 45 degrees. Although initially thought to be a celestial body, it was soon confirmed to be a cluster of eight balloons launched by MIT for cosmic ray research.

The initial confusion was typical of UFO reports at the time, where lack of clear information and the need to keep certain data secret made accurate evaluation difficult. However, thanks to collaboration with the Coast Guard, it was confirmed that the object was not supernatural or extraterrestrial, but a scientific balloon formation. This case was key to understanding that many sightings had earthly explanations, and marked an important step in the declassification of UFO incidents.
