🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
A B-29 reconnaissance aircraft from the 373rd Reconnaissance Squadron (VLR) reported a red glowing object over the ocean south of Bermuda in January 1949. The object appeared as a red mass with a white base, resembling a flare or railroad light. Observers noted the object was transparent, allowing stars and water to be seen through it, and it emitted light that illuminated the ocean surface and clouds. Initially thought to be a burning ship, witnesses ruled this out. The phenomenon remained visible for over an hour without maneuvers or projections. The possibility of auroras borealis was considered, but observers, including a radar technician, found no evidence of a known natural phenomenon.
The B-29 crew included a radar operator who attempted to detect the object with equipment but failed. Experts in physics and meteorology were consulted, suggesting it might be related to a geomagnetic storm caused by intense solar activity. However, no definitive explanation was reached, and the case was included in the U.S. Air Force's Project "Grudge."
