Summary

In January 1949, a U.S. Air Force officer and his wife observed an unidentified aerial object over the Gulf of Mexico, between Cortez and Bradenton, Florida. The object, described as resembling a cucumber, was seen with 7x50 binoculars and exhibited erratic movements, including sudden ascents and descents. The couple reported that the object had illuminated windows and emitted bright red flashes, brighter than a V-1 rocket. The UFO reached an altitude of around 40,000 feet before disappearing.

The report details that the object was observed on two separate occasions, at a distance of approximately 6 to 10 miles. The witness, an experienced intelligence officer, described the phenomenon with seriousness and precision, highlighting the unusual nature of the flashes and the object's behavior. Although no conventional explanation was found, the report suggests it was neither an airplane nor a known rocket. The description of the shape and behavior of the UFO remains intriguing and has no parallels in aviation of the time.
