🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In April 1949, a military team in New Mexico observed an unidentified aerial object while tracking a weather balloon with a theodolite. The object suddenly appeared in the direction of the balloon and was moving at an astonishing speed, estimated at 5 degrees per second. Despite using precise instruments, observers couldn't clearly focus on the object due to its speed. They described an elliptical shape with a 2.5:1 ratio and a white color with a yellowish tint on one side. The object quickly moved northward, growing smaller before disappearing after about 60 seconds of observation.
Military researchers concluded the object wasn't a balloon and its speed and altitude were unusual. Although one observer calculated it could be at 300,000 feet, experts noted the estimates were unreliable due to lack of precise data. The report highlighted the need for clear instructions for civilian observers, as initial confusion with the balloon complicated identification. The incident remains a mystery without a conclusive explanation.
