🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In May 1949, a report from the United States Air Force documented a sighting of an unidentified flying object (UFO) over the Hanford atomic plant in Washington. The incident occurred on May 21 when an operator at Moses Lake Air Force Base received a call about a "flying saucer" hovering and then speeding away southeast. Fighter jets were scrambled to intercept it, but no visual contact was made. Radar detected a white or silver object moving faster than jet fighters. Later, falling paper fragments were reported, described as red on one side and green on the other. Eventually, it was discovered that the "UFOs" were actually advertisements for an air rodeo, and the planes had been misidentified.
The report concluded there was no connection between the sightings and the falling papers, attributing both to misperception and communication errors. Weather and aerial conditions were meticulously recorded, but no conclusive physical evidence was found. This case reflects the confusion and fear surrounding UFO reports during a time of heightened nuclear sensitivity.
