In May 1949, a railroad yard clerk in Elko, Nevada, observed five amber lights in a V formation at an estimated altitude of 1,000 feet. The lights were moving westward at a speed of over 500 miles per hour. The witness heard no sound and saw no exhaust, and could not determine whether the lights came from one large object or five smaller ones. The official investigation found no other witnesses or physical evidence, and nearby aircraft did not report any unusual activity. Weather conditions were clear, with visibility of 15 miles and scattered clouds.
