🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In May 1949, a U.S. Air Force officer reported a bright object while flying over Japan. The pilot described an intense light, similar to that reflected by a B-29 bomber, moving rapidly northward. Initially thinking it might be an aircraft, he found no conventional explanation for what he saw. The report notes that the object disappeared after a few minutes, merging into a cloud layer. The investigation concluded it could have been Venus or a foreign reconnaissance aircraft, but no conclusive evidence was found.
The pilot, James J. Giles, was experienced and deemed reliable. There were no other witnesses or physical evidence. Despite ruling out explanations like sunlight reflections or shadows, the mystery remains. This case, like many from the era, reflects the uncertainty and interest in unidentified aerial phenomena during the Cold War.
