Summary

In September 1949, two teenagers in Knoxville, Tennessee, reported seeing an unidentified flying object during a camping trip. The object, described as a flat, shiny disc, appeared directly above them at an estimated altitude of 40,000 to 50,000 feet. It left no exhaust trail and made no noise, which intrigued the witnesses. They both agreed the object moved in a straight line from northeast to southwest at high speed and remained visible for 2½ to 3 minutes before disappearing. The reflective material of the disc was described as resembling aircraft metal.

An official investigation by the U.S. Air Force included weather data from the Weather Bureau. Wind reports at different altitudes did not match the object’s trajectory, ruling out weather balloons. The witnesses, both aviation students, were considered credible due to their detailed and consistent answers. Despite no physical evidence, the report concluded the object could not be identified with known technology of the time.
