Summary

In December 1949, multiple witnesses in North and South Carolina reported the sighting of an unidentified aerial object moving in an unusual manner. The object was first seen near Fayetteville, above the southern horizon, and then rapidly moved southward, leaving a vapor trail. Witnesses in Hamlet, Chesterfield, and Greenwood confirmed the presence of the object, describing it in various ways: as a vertical neon tube, a floating balloon, or even a circular craft. Despite attempts by pilots to follow it, the object quickly disappeared toward the setting sun. The Air Force and meteorological authorities could not provide a clear explanation, though the possibility of a weather balloon was considered. However, witnesses insisted the object did not resemble any known conventional objects.

The news generated significant interest in the region, with reports in local newspapers such as the "Charlotte Observer" and "The State". Observers included professionals, police officers, and ordinary citizens, who all agreed the object did not match any known commercial or military aircraft. Despite investigations, no satisfactory explanation was found for the phenomenon, contributing to the enduring mystery surrounding this case.
