Summary

In January 1950, three U.S. Air Force officers reported an unidentified flying object during a flight between Pope and Bolling Air Force Bases. Captain Theron C. Fehrevach was the first to notice the object, described as a dark sphere with a smoke trail, moving horizontally and evasively. The object showed no features of a conventional aircraft and did not resemble a cloud or meteor. Despite attempts to approach it, the C-45 could not overtake it. Passenger 1st Lt. John H. Van Santen confirmed the description, noting the object had no visible wings or stabilizers. All three officers agreed the object maintained variable speeds, easily outpacing the aircraft, and its behavior did not match any known phenomenon.

The subsequent investigation highlighted the credibility of the witnesses, all experienced in flight and with no apparent motives. Weather conditions were clear, with good visibility and no factors affecting the observation. Despite their reluctance to report due to public controversy around UFOs, their testimony was consistent and detailed. The report concluded the object could not be identified with any known technology, and its evasive behavior and unusual speed distinguished it from any natural or artificial phenomenon.
