Summary

In March 1950, multiple sightings of unidentified flying objects were reported in Chile. The first sighting occurred in Punta Arenas on March 11, with a typical description: a silver object at high altitude, shaped like a ping-pong ball. Local press and civilians documented the phenomenon, though Professor Frederico Rutland from the Chilean Astronomical Observatory suggested it was the planet Venus. Later, in San Bernardo and Valparaíso on March 24 and 25, more sightings were reported. Air Attaché personnel, including Lieutenant Patterson, observed an object moving at high speed and altitude. However, the next day, Patterson concluded the object was stationary and identified it as Venus, supporting Rutland's theory.

Local press labeled these events as "flying discs," despite military and scientific authorities lacking conclusive evidence. Reports relied on civilian testimonies and military observations, with no photographs or physical evidence. Despite doubts, the sightings generated public interest and were widely covered in the press. The official report concluded there was insufficient data for a definitive evaluation, but emphasized the importance of considering astronomical explanations like the presence of Venus in the sky.
