🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In March 1950, three witnesses in Sioux City, Iowa, observed an unidentified flying object for approximately 10 minutes. The object, described as silver or metallic, was moving slowly at a high altitude, tracing a square pattern over the city before disappearing. The witnesses, working in a stockyard, used binoculars and could not agree on its exact shape, though one thought it might be a weather balloon. The lack of noise or exhaust trail added to the mystery of the sighting.
The confusion among witnesses reflected the difficulty of observing an object at 20,000 feet. Despite conflicting descriptions, Air Force reports concluded it could be a balloon, though the possibility of an unknown object was not ruled out. Like many cases from the era, this one was filed without a definitive resolution, but it remains an example of how UFO sightings generated both curiosity and uncertainty.
