In April 1960, multiple witnesses in Hertford, North Carolina, observed an unidentified object in the sky. It was described as rectangular, bright, and silent, moving at a steady speed. A group of people in front of a store watched it for five minutes or more, while others along the street also noticed it. Witnesses included the store owner, a member of the town council, and a former legislator, all of whom agreed it was not a balloon, conventional aircraft, or sunlight reflection.
The object made no sound and had an elongated shape with a red hue. Despite various descriptions, no one could identify it with certainty. In a nearby town, Woodland, another witness saw a similar object, described as larger and flying at a lower altitude. All accounts agreed the object was unlike anything seen before. The sighting was reported in a local newspaper and later included in a U.S. Army report.
