In April 1950, a couple in New Orleans was awakened by a red-orange object hovering in the sky. The object, a perfect sphere about three feet in diameter, moved slowly southward over Lake Pontchartrain. Initially thought to be an aircraft, its unusual behavior raised questions. The witness described it as a smooth, glowing ball with no light or sound. After landing on the lake, the object attempted to rise several times before coming to rest. The couple drove along the shore trying to locate it, but found no trace. Their detailed and consistent account added credibility to the report.
The military's classified report suggested it might have been a seaplane landing, but the object's behavior didn't match typical aircraft. The witness, a clerk for the Sewerage and Water Board, wasn't wearing glasses and confirmed the object's shape and color remained unchanged. Despite clear weather and no wind, the object left no trail or impact on the clouds. The detailed description and immediate reaction of the witness make this one of the most intriguing cases of the 1950s.
