Summary

In January 1951, several witnesses in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, reported a bright object initially mistaken for an aircraft. However, since it did not move, local authorities could not determine its origin. The phenomenon was classified as likely a balloon or an astronomical event, but insufficient data prevented a conclusive evaluation. The bright star Rigel was low on the horizon, and other celestial bodies like Venus and Jupiter were not visible. The sighting was brief and no disappearance of the object was recorded.

A related case occurred in January 1952, when an F-82 aircraft attempted to intercept an unidentified target detected by radar. The target appeared and disappeared at different altitudes, attributed to abnormal refraction caused by a thermal inversion in the atmosphere. Weather data confirmed the presence of inversion layers, explaining the strange radar readings. Although nothing was visually observed, the radar showed erratic movements. Ultimately, the phenomenon was determined to be caused by atmospheric conditions, not an unknown object.
