Summary

In January 1951, U.S. Air Force pilots in the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, reported an unidentified aerial phenomenon. It was a vapor trail observed at high altitude for 23 minutes. Pilots on an intercept mission could not determine its origin. Although several possibilities were considered, such as balloons or aircraft, the report concluded it was a contrail. However, the source of the vapor trail remained unknown, adding mystery to this case.

The official report classified it as a contrail, but details are sparse. Pilots described a white cloud at 35,000 feet, with a course of 245 degrees. Despite detailed observations, there were no photographs or additional data to confirm its nature. This document, part of a declassified archive, shows how even in the 1950s, unidentified aerial phenomena remained a mystery for military authorities.
