🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In May 1951, an aerial object was sighted over South Falls, Montana, and was initially classified as unidentified. A woman described a bright object shaped like a ball or three-pointed star, appearing and disappearing against a blue sky. The object moved slowly eastward and was observed for 30 minutes. A Northwest Airlines pilot also reported seeing the same phenomenon. Due to its description and movement direction, investigators considered the possibility of a weather balloon.
The key to solving the mystery came when it was discovered that a balloon had been launched from Great Falls AFB at 14:00, just before the sighting. This white balloon moved in the same direction as the observed object, leading officers to conclude the sighting was actually the weather balloon. Despite the explanation, the report reflects the official concern of the time for unidentified objects, highlighting the Cold War context and aerial surveillance.
