🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In May 1951, a witness in Chicago observed a cigar-shaped object with an intermittent light at the front. The object, described as a rocket with a flame trail about a mile long, remained visible for 12 to 15 minutes. It was estimated to be flying at around 50,000 feet, moving from east to west before disappearing. Other neighbors also saw it, but there were no official records of such activity. The Air Force concluded it was likely an aircraft with contrail, though a balloon or astronomical phenomenon could not be ruled out.
The duration of the sighting and the description of the blinking light matched what would be expected from an aircraft, leading to the dismissal of a rocket. However, the lack of photographs or additional records left the matter unresolved. Like many other cases from that era, this one reflects the confusion between natural phenomena and unidentified objects, and shows how civilian testimonies were analyzed by military authorities without reaching definitive conclusions.
