Summary

In June 1951, a U.S. Air Force aircraft observed two contrails near Thule, Greenland. The pilot and crew, convinced they were contrails, admitted they were unfamiliar with Arctic weather phenomena that could mimic them. Temperature and atmospheric conditions suggested a thermal inversion, adding mystery to the sighting. Despite the low altitude of the plane, the contrails appeared to be at 30,000 feet, raising doubts about their origin.

The crew recorded weather and wind conditions, but no photos or radar were used. The report was classified as secret, indicating the Air Force's interest in any unidentified aerial phenomenon. Although concluded as contrails, the lack of certainty and the Cold War context add an air of mystery to this case. Today, this document is part of the history of UFO investigations during a time of geopolitical tension.
