Summary

In December 1951, a U.S. Air Force pilot reported an unidentified object while flying near Columbus, Ohio. The pilot described the object as an aircraft without a tail section, moving at high speed and making no noise. The incident occurred when the pilot, flying an F-84, spotted the object at around 20,000 feet, five miles east of Columbus. The object was moving in the opposite direction to the pilot's aircraft and appeared to be rolling rapidly on its axis. The pilot attempted to intercept it, but lost sight of the object when looking directly into the sun.

The initial investigation suggested the object could have been a weather balloon launched from Columbus Municipal Airport. However, the report did not rule out the possibility that the object had no conventional explanation. The pilot, an experienced jet fighter pilot, stated the object did not match any known aircraft. Although a balloon was considered, the report noted the object's behavior didn't align with what would be expected from a balloon viewed from a high-speed aircraft. The case remains inconclusive, but it's a fascinating example of a UFO sighting during the Cold War.
