🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In January 1952, a U.S. Navy pilot reported a mysterious object while flying near Mitchel AFB in New York. The object, described as a circular shape resembling a parachute, was observed for about two and a half minutes. Initially, the pilot thought it was a parachute, but soon noticed unusual movements, such as rapid acceleration and climbing. The official report suggests it might have been a weather balloon launched from the base, though the pilot did not confirm it. The object displayed behaviors inconsistent with a typical balloon, such as sudden maneuvers and a sudden disappearance without gradually fading. The investigation concluded that, while not confirmed, it was possible the object was a balloon.
The pilot performed maneuvers to approach the object, including tight turns, raising doubts about whether it was indeed a balloon. The investigation reviewed details like the object's estimated speed, apparent size, and trajectory, concluding it partially matched the characteristics of a weather balloon. However, the pilot insisted the object did not behave like a normal one. Despite no other ground witnesses, the report suggests the object could have been a balloon seen from an unusual perspective, explaining its strange appearance.
