Summary

In March 1952, several witnesses in Columbus, Ohio, reported the sighting of an unidentified aerial object. The object, described as a long, shiny, wingless body with a pinkish-red flame at the rear, was seen between 6:15 and 6:45 PM. Witnesses in Columbus and Johnstown observed it as it made a circle to the north. Initially, it was thought to be an unexplained phenomenon, but soon more earthly explanations emerged.

An engineer from the North American Aviation plant identified the object as a B-45 aircraft from Lockbourne Air Base. The explanation pointed to the vapor trail of the plane, illuminated by the setting sun, creating a reddish hue that could be misleading. Although several witnesses confirmed the engineer’s account, the mystery of the aerial object sparked interest and debate in the local community. This case reflects how the aviation advancements of the time could easily be mistaken for unexplained phenomena.
