Summary

In April 1952, an air base in Benson, Pennsylvania, recorded an unusual aerial phenomenon. Three objects appeared on the radar screen for 28 minutes, showing a pattern of three solid vertical lines. Radar operators identified them as friendly aircraft using the IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) system, a tool to distinguish allies from enemies. Despite not having the Mark X IFF equipment, observers noted the objects flying at about 12,000 feet and reaching average speeds of 400 knots, which was unusual for the time.

The report details that the objects moved eastward and disappeared near Mitchell AFB. A redacted officer observed the track on the PPI screen. Additionally, a cold front was passing through the area, possibly causing a temperature inversion, an atmospheric phenomenon that can sometimes reflect radar signals unexpectedly. Although balloon or astronomical explanations were considered, the data pointed to conventional aircraft. No interception action was taken, as the objects posed no threat.
