🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In April 1952, several civilians in Fargo and Moorhead reported seeing bright red objects flying in a wide "V" formation. The sighting was made visually without optical aids, and witnesses described straight and level maneuvers. The objects disappeared suddenly after a few seconds. The initial report did not clearly identify the nature of the objects, but noted that they left no trail or noise, which caused some confusion.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the objects were actually flocks of mallard and teal ducks. A military officer, intrigued by the descriptions, conducted an observation from a high building with special equipment. There he confirmed that the birds reflected the neon city lights, explaining the unusual glow. The initial confusion was due to ground-level observation, where lighting and perspective made clear identification difficult. In the end, the case was resolved simply, although not without first generating a classified report.
