Summary

In October 1952, a U.S. Air Force pilot and radar observer reported an unusual object while on an escort mission near Hungnam, North Korea. The pilot described a reddish-orange glowing ball that appeared suddenly during a turning maneuver. The object moved at an unexpectedly high speed, at least twice that of their aircraft, and showed no signs of propulsion or typical flight characteristics of a rocket or plane. Despite attempts to intercept it, there was no radar return, adding to the mystery. The observers concluded it was not a rocket, aircraft, balloon, or ground light, as it did not match any known objects they had seen before.

The description and behavior of the object raised questions among the officers who reviewed the report. While conventional explanations like ground lights or reflections were not ruled out, the testimony of two combat veterans with extensive experience in WWII and Korea added credibility to the sighting. The object disappeared to the north, descending and fading over five minutes. Although no definitive conclusion was reached, the official report labeled it as "unidentified," a classification that at the time meant no reasonable explanation was found for the phenomenon.
