A weather observer in Knoxville, Tennessee, recorded the presence of six white objects near a weather balloon. The phenomenon was observed using the standard meteorological theodolite, adding credibility to the sighting. The objects were in a tight formation and moved in a coordinated manner. One of them made a shallow dive toward the balloon, as if to investigate, before quickly pulling away.
The objects appeared round or nearly round, white or whitish in color, and about the same size as the balloon at that altitude. The observation lasted between one and one and a half minutes. The balloon disappeared from view at 58,022 feet, possibly due to bursting. This case is similar to others in the records, suggesting it was not an isolated event.
