Summary

In February 1953, five U.S. Air Force personnel stationed in Hokkaido, Japan, observed a bright object changing colors rapidly from red, green, and white. The phenomenon lasted 35 minutes and caused some confusion among the witnesses, as some reported movement while others considered it stationary. The light was brighter than the evening star and located approximately 15 degrees above the horizon. Although initially thought to be a star, the unusual color changes and behavior raised questions.

During the visual observation, radar briefly detected a target at 165 nautical miles and 85 degrees, but it disappeared quickly, leading operators to classify it as interference. The final evaluation concluded the visual object was likely the star Regulus, though a weather balloon or optical illusion could not be ruled out. Clear weather and astronomical data supported the celestial theory, but the color-shifting nature of the object remains an intriguing mystery.
