In February 1953, two men in Rainer, Alabama, observed a metallic object performing maneuvers impossible for conventional aircraft. The object appeared round from one angle and had swept-back wings from another, moving at high speed without leaving vapor trails. Witnesses saw it for 20 minutes as it executed sharp turns, climbs, and dives. A B-47 was in the area, but could not identify the object. The official conclusion suggested it might be a weather balloon, though the witnesses were not trained observers.

The official investigation considered the object could be a fighter jet like an F-56, but no confirmation was found. Clouds at 20,000 feet made identification difficult. Despite doubts, witnesses agreed the object showed no propulsion and maintained constant speed.
