Summary

In February 1953, a radar operator in Greenland recorded an unidentified object appearing on the radar screen. The object emerged from the normal clutter area four miles southwest of the base, maintained a constant altitude below 6000 feet, and moved southwest. After being tracked for three miles, it disappeared at a distance of seven miles. Investigators concluded it was likely a meteorological phenomenon, such as a temperature inversion or ice crystals reflecting radar signals.

The investigation revealed discrepancies in the testimonies of the operators, such as the estimated observation time and the object's speed. Additionally, the crew of the C-124, which was landing at the base, saw nothing, and the air defense system did not detect the object. Weather conditions, including a temperature inversion at 3500 feet, suggest the radar picked up reflections from ice crystals generated by the aircraft passing through that layer. This would explain the blip on the radar screen, similar in size and shape to the reflection of the C-124.
