Summary

In June 1953, three control tower operators at Mather Field in Sacramento, California, observed a red object in the sky. The event occurred around 9:30 PM when a red dot appeared approximately 8 miles west of the tower at an estimated altitude of 10,000 feet. The observers, using binoculars, described the object as round, about 3 feet in diameter, and completely stationary. For 15 minutes, the object remained motionless, causing some confusion as it did not display features of an aircraft or weather balloon.

McClellan and Sacramento Towers also reported seeing the object from different angles. Interestingly, the object vanished suddenly when the observers turned their heads. Despite checking all possible explanations, including the presence of aircraft in the area, no conventional cause was found. The official conclusion pointed to an astronomical explanation involving Regulus, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter, though this did not fully satisfy investigators. The case was included in Project Blue Book, highlighting the need to improve documentation and use cameras for future sightings.
