Luminous UFO with Flame Tail Observed in 1953

Summary

A Royal Air Force pilot reported a luminous, elongated object with illuminated windows resembling a commercial aircraft but lacking navigation lights. The object appeared at the same altitude as his aircraft at 10,000 feet and moved at a phenomenal speed. Flames were seen trailing from its rear, and it remained visible for 10 seconds before disappearing.

The report, classified as an "international detour observation" by the USDA, notes that the base intelligence officer concluded the object could not be a conventional or jet aircraft due to its unusual characteristics and speed. Despite being reported by an experienced officer with 13 years of flying experience, including three in jet aircraft, no photographs or physical evidence were obtained.
