Summary

In January 1954, radar personnel at Kelly AFB, Texas, recorded a series of objects appearing on the PPI screen for nearly two hours. Between one and three blips were observed with speeds ranging from 100 to 6,000 miles per hour within a 30-mile radius. The objects generally moved southeast, briefly merging for three minutes before separating and disappearing. Fog and rain hampered visual observation, and a fighter scramble was launched without success.

The official conclusion pointed to an atmospheric disturbance as the likely cause, though other explanations were not ruled out. Radar and visual data were inconsistent, and operators could not definitively identify the nature of the objects. This case is a classic example of how weather phenomena and misinterpretation can generate UFO reports, but it also highlights the difficulty of accurately assessing aerial events in adverse weather conditions.
