🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In February 1954, a woman in Wichita, Kansas, observed a round, dark object for nearly five minutes as it drifted slowly without leaving a trail or making noise. According to her account, the object was at an estimated altitude of 10,000 feet and was moving in a southeasterly direction. Using high-powered Japanese binoculars, the observer noted that the object occupied two-thirds of her field of view, leading her to estimate it as very large. The official report classified it as a probable balloon, though other possibilities were not ruled out. The sighting was detailed and lasted a considerable time, adding credibility to her account.
Weather conditions on the day were favorable, with 15 miles of visibility and moderate winds at different altitudes. Despite no recorded meteorological or aerial activity in the area, the report did not reach a definitive conclusion. The source of the testimony, whose identity was partially redacted, was unknown to the officers who reviewed the case, limiting the assessment of her reliability. Nevertheless, the case was considered solid enough to be filed and sent to various air intelligence centers.
