🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In May 1954, Squadron Leader Donald R. Higgin of the Royal Air Force reported an unidentified flying object during an air exercise near Oceanside, California. The pilot described a triangular-shaped object with a third fin on the upper half and a dark metallic sheen. The UFO passed between two military aircraft at an altitude of 22,000 feet, traveling at an estimated speed exceeding 240 knots. Although Higgin briefly observed the object, other crew members did not see it, adding to the mystery of the case. Investigators concluded it was not a conventional object, though they suggested it could have been a lenticular cloud. However, the altitude and speed of the object did not align with that explanation.
The speed at which the object appeared and disappeared, along with its unusual appearance, led to a detailed report by military authorities. Despite no photos or physical evidence, the pilot's and radar observer's testimonies were documented. The report was classified and only declassified decades later as part of Project 10073 records. This case is another example of the numerous sightings from the 1950s that could not be conclusively identified, leaving open questions about the nature of the objects seen in the sky.
