Beacon Identified Over South Dakota in 1954

Summary

In July 1954, an object was sighted over White Wood, South Dakota, and remained visible for two hours. Described as a large, bright point moving slowly near the ground, it prompted fighter jets to scramble, though they failed to make contact. Witnesses reported changes in its brightness and direction, and the object was seen by all local residents. Eventually, it was concluded to be a beacon located about 10 miles southwest of Rapid City. Despite its unusual appearance, it was not considered an unexplained phenomenon.
