Summary

In September 1954, a witness in Kinston, North Carolina, observed an object described as a thin football-shaped object with a blue-green color. The object was reported as an incandescent light moving in straight and level flight. The sighting lasted between 3 and 5 seconds, and the witness saw it pass through their field of vision at an elevation of 25 degrees. Weather conditions included haze up to 4,000 feet and a halo on the moon. Although initially considered a meteor, the explanation did not satisfy the witness, who showed some reluctance in sharing details. The official report classified it as an astronomical phenomenon, but no definitive conclusion was reached.

The report, part of Project 10073, was processed by several U.S. Air Force units, including the Air Defense Command. Despite detailed meteorological data, there were no radar or photographic records to support the observation. The witness did not offer a clear explanation for the phenomenon, and the report did not include additional testimonies. Like many cases from that era, this one highlights the difficulty of distinguishing natural objects from unexplained phenomena in the night sky.
