🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In September 1954, a cigar-shaped object was observed over Rome, Italy, sparking curiosity and mystery. Air traffic controllers at Ciampino Airport described it as a "half-cigar" leaving a luminous trail while moving slowly at 1,200 meters altitude. The object remained visible for 45 minutes, and according to witnesses, it appeared jellyfish-like when stationary. Although no photos were taken, several observers saw it with the naked eye and binoculars. The official evaluation considered it likely a balloon, but the detailed description and witnesses' reactions suggest an unusual experience.
This case is part of a series of UFO sightings in Europe during 1954, a year in which public interest in unidentified flying objects increased. The publication of books like Donald E. Keyhoe's and intense media coverage contributed to greater awareness of the phenomenon. Although many sightings were attributed to balloons or natural phenomena, some cases, like the one in Rome, remain difficult to explain with complete certainty. The official report mentions that the object was detected by radar, although no complete report was received on this detection, adding a touch of mystery to the case.
