🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In December 1954, a U.S. Air Force pilot reported an unidentified flying object near Nogales, Arizona. The pilot had both visual and radar contact with the object, which appeared as a hazy glow with red and green flashes. Although initially considered a possible balloon, the object's behavior suggested otherwise. The pilot described how the object remained at an altitude of between 5,000 and 10,000 feet above his aircraft throughout the observation, with no other air traffic in the area. Radar interference was also noted, complicating the identification process.
The investigation concluded that the object could have been a balloon, but other possibilities were not ruled out. The report emphasized the importance of considering anomalous weather conditions, such as temperature inversion, which might have affected visual and radar perception. Despite interception attempts, the pilot could not get close enough for further details. The report highlighted the need to improve detection and tracking capabilities for unidentified objects, especially in border areas.
