Summary

A bright white object was sighted in Middlebury, Vermont, on September 12, 1955. Witnesses described it as resembling a cap, about half the size of a dime, with a semi-transparent and shiny appearance. It was drifting slowly northeast and remained visible for five minutes. Although initially intriguing, it was determined to likely be a weather balloon. A police officer was dispatched to the location, and hospital workers also observed it, supporting the balloon theory.

Weather data confirmed conditions suitable for balloon movement, and fighter jets patrolling the area failed to locate the object. This, along with its physical description and steady motion, led investigators to conclude the sighting had no mysterious explanation, fitting what one would expect from a weather balloon. Despite the unusual appearance, there were no signs of unidentified activity.
