🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In September 1955, an observer in Mountain View, California, reported an aerial phenomenon that was initially classified as a meteor. The report described three distinct sightings: an orange-red round object with a light trail crossing the sky in three seconds, a yellow light resembling a comet tail visible for ten seconds, and a white object with a tail that disappeared in five seconds. Witnesses included both civilians and military personnel, adding credibility to the account. Although balloon or aircraft explanations were considered, the data more clearly pointed to an astronomical event.
The official evaluation concluded it was a meteor, but the report did not completely rule out other possibilities. Detailed descriptions and multiple witnesses led to several reviews of the case. Despite the lack of photographs or additional confirmation, the meteorological data and object descriptions were consistent with a meteor. This case, like many from the Cold War era, reflects the uncertainty and interest in unidentified aerial phenomena during that time.
