Summary

In January 1956, bright white flashes were reported over Honshu, Japan, observed by both civilian and military sources. Reconnaissance aircraft were scrambled to investigate, but no explosive sounds were reported and no definitive cause was identified. The observation lasted nearly two hours, indicating the phenomenon was not fleeting. While other explanations such as balloons or aircraft were initially considered, meteorological data and witness accounts pointed to weather conditions as the most likely cause.

Records showed a band of stratocumulus clouds and snow in the area, which could have reflected sunlight intensely. Japanese authorities also reported similar observations in coastal regions, reinforcing the theory that the flashes were atmospheric in nature. Despite the lack of photographs or precise data, the final evaluation concluded that the flashes were almost certainly due to weather conditions. This case illustrates how natural phenomena can be misinterpreted as unexplained objects.
