Summary

In May 1956, a civilian in Amarillo, Texas, observed a round and bright object in the sky for over an hour and a half. The object appeared in the northwest at around 45 degrees elevation and remained nearly stationary before fading away. The witness, along with his wife, described the object as the size of a pea held at arm's length and a bright golden color. The report includes testimony from a military officer who confirmed the object was likely a weather balloon with a light attached. The alignment of the sighting location and time with a pilot's observation of a balloon with a light supports this conclusion.

The report was compiled by the 688th AC&W Squadron and submitted to the Air Defense Command. The responsible officer concluded the object was not an aircraft or astronomical phenomenon, but a weather balloon. Meteorological data and flight paths of other aircraft in the area were analyzed to rule out other possibilities. Despite the long observation time and detailed description, there were no photos or interceptions, which supports the balloon theory. The official report ends with confirmation that there was no significant UFO activity in the area.
