In July 1956, a witness in Winchester, Massachusetts, reported an object performing maneuvers impossible for conventional aircraft. The object, as small as a pinhead at arm’s length, changed direction multiple times before heading northwest and disappearing. Its estimated speed was 100 mph, and its behavior led to speculation about whether it could be a helicopter or a balloon. Despite tentative explanations, the official report failed to reach a clear conclusion.
The incident occurred just before midnight, shortly before Independence Day celebrations. The witness initially thought it was a shooting star or a planet, but the object’s unusual movements told otherwise. According to the local newspaper, the object emitted a low-pitched hum and crossed the sky several times before speeding away. Although a helicopter was considered as a possible explanation, the lack of concrete evidence left the case unresolved. This case is another example of the many 1956 reports that remain unexplained.
