🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In July 1956, multiple witnesses in Maine observed an unusual unidentified object. A man piloting a boat on Manungum Lake saw a round, pear-shaped object that was black and emitted blue and yellow flames. It left a wavy luminous trail, wider than the object itself, and disappeared after a loud sonic boom. Other witnesses, including a housewife and a paper mill worker, reported similar objects with conical and tubular shapes, traveling at speeds exceeding those of contemporary aircraft. Despite detailed descriptions, investigators concluded it was likely a meteor. The absence of clouds, the description of the trail, and the object's speed matched the characteristics of a meteorite disintegrating in the atmosphere. However, the lack of physical evidence and variability in descriptions sparked some controversy among the officers handling the case.
