🇺🇸 USAF — Project Blue Book
In August 1956, a witness in Donora, Pennsylvania described an object that appeared round to the naked eye and triangular through binoculars. The observer, who used binoculars for much of the sighting, indicated the object was about the size of the North Star or slightly smaller than a dime. Yellowish white in color, it had a reddish brown tail 1/16 its size, located midway on one of its legs. The object moved in a rectangular clockwise pattern, appearing and disappearing six times over a period of one hour and 35 minutes. The repetition of this pattern and its alignment with Mars led investigators to consider it could be the red planet.
Despite the long duration of the sighting and the detailed description, there was no radar contact or confirmation from local astronomical observation. Donora police attempted to verify the sighting but failed to locate the object due to a possible directional misunderstanding. The lack of additional data and the coincidence with Mars in the sky led to classifying the case as an astronomical phenomenon, although the witness's account suggests an unusual experience that doesn't easily fit conventional explanations.
